I am having problems with aggressive 1/2 red 1/2 black ants in my main flower bed. Previously they were in it but manageable, last summer I mulched the bed with spruce chips from a logging site. The ants have taken that as an invitation to overtake my flower bed.I have tried diatomaceous earth and those raid drops that they are supposed to take to the colony to wipe them out.I am looking for a solution to get rid of them for good.

This may make you all laugh, but, I have a red/black ant pile that is a least 3' tall & 4' across. After fighting them for many years, I decided to live with them. Each time I have empty jam, syrup (anything sweet) even empty fruit tins, also all fruit peels, I take to their hill & leave there. I have a huge pile of mulch (fir needles & grass clippings) close to their "hill" and they leave me totally alone, if I keep them supplied. It works for me!

I have been invaded with ants as well. I tried BugGone C- a powder- worked somewhat, had to keep applying it as we had so much rain. Then my mother told me about 1/2 borax and 1/2 icing sugar.sprinkle on and around the ant hills.. sounds strange but it has worked at her house.I have just purchased a spray, on the advise of my brother-in-law, it is by Ortho called BugBGone Max.... he says it works, so I am going to give it a try... I am tired of tripping on the darn ant hills.

Had ants (black) invading my window boxes so I planted mint in the centre of the boxes and the ants disappeared. Tansy is also supposed to work. They don't like marigolds either.

Mint works very well. So does boiling water and vinegar which also works on weeds.
