I noticed no one responded to your message, so I thought I'd give it a go!! I just got a book about cottage gardening, and surprisingly, there were cannas used in nearly every incarnation of the cottage garden. I found that no matter what they were planted with, they lent an exotic air. Some really pretty combos (I thought, anyway!) were: black-eyed susan, crocosmia, and abutilon. In general, I found that they were really 'lit up' by anything with yellow, orange or red tones. Hope that helped!
