I am worried about one of my apple trees. The bark around the base is loose and falling off. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this and how I can prevent it? Many thanks!

Is the bark falling off all the way around the trunk, or just on the south/east side? If it's all around the trunk it could be winter damage from voles or rabbits (you can put a chicken wire fence around the base of the tree in the winter to protect it). If it's only on the exposed side, it could be freezing damage ie the bark freezes and thaws, and then loosens as a result. You won't be able to fix the damage that has happened, but you can prevent further damage by protecting the tree in late fall with a paper wrap available at nurseries specifically for trees. It is white and prevents the bark from absorbing sunlight which warms it during the day, and stops the freeze thaw cycle.

Hello Rod... there is a site that you can email with questions about plants and fruit trees... just email your question to loveyourplants@qwest.net and they will get back to you... also the Live Chat on Sundays with Art Drysdale on this site is very helpful.. Good Luck
