I'm having an arbor with a gate built for my front garden and would like to have a red rose as my central plant.I have plenty of roses in my back yard but I have never planted any climbers.(what was I thinking!!)The area in question gets the sun pretty much all day,and will be sheltered from the wind by the house. I'm open for suggestions.Thanks...

Hi Rita, I had a "Dublin Bay"... beautiful except it did not survive, none of the hybrid-tea like ones did so my suggestion to you would be a Capt. Samuel Holland.. in that series it is hard to find a real rose red that can be trained into a climber but I think this is the closest you would get. It is described as a medium red but is more fuschia like... very prolific.. constant blooming and HARDY!!!! I planted one last spring and as a new plant was amazed at the number of blooms i got which by the way carried on till almost October!!! I did read that it is one of that series that performs well even in it's 1st year and i guess that is true. i also have planted last year a Henry kelsey and although it is doing well the other one surpassed it greatly.. hope this helps you. Neither were given any winter protection and are just fine.. one cane on my Henry Kelsey has a little bit of dieback but just the one and not much, the other nothing!!! I am very pleased with it. We had temp's this year to -22 and it is not in a sheltered area at all.

Good morning Rita. I have a 'Blaze' climbing rose on an arbor at the cottage. It climbed half way up the first season. The gardening zone up there is 5a. I watched Ken Beatty show and he always said 'Blaze' was the hardiest climbing rose for the prairies and since our location is a lot like what I imagine the prairie weather to be like, I bought it. Where I have it it also gets full sun most of the day. The one I have is red. Hope this helps. Marg
