I'm going to prune my weeping mulberry back to hopefully improve the shape, and was curious about how much is too much. Husband wants to cut right back to the main trunk, and I'm hesitant about this since it means I will have to cut some really big branches. I'm scared that this may shock the tree/kill it. Any suggestions...

Depending on where you are located, I would wait for spring, first of all, just to make sure that winter doesn't do the pruning for you. Then, follow the standard pruning rules: begin by removing anything which is dead or broken, then remove any branches that rub together, and finally, only then, remove anything that is "too big", too long, too... whatever! Remember, you can always take off more if necessary. Err on the side of caution would be my advice.

Good answer, Pat.I would add: for whatever reason no more than 25% of any tree or shrub should be removed at a single pruning in one year. The loss of more foliage would adversely affect the complex photosynthesis process that is the basis for circulation/ digestion within and growth of any plant.

I just recently bought a house and it has a mulberry tree. It looks like it has never been pruned and I think it is an older tree. There are alot of big dead branches, pretty big in diameter on the underneath of the tree. Do I cut all of the dead branches off and how do I keep the branches, in summer, from not shooting straight up. Last year it was out of control.

Does anyone know why my weeping mulberry's branches do not weep - they grow straight up into the sky!

Hate to say it but are you sure you were sold a weeping mulberry. Around here we have two types - some reaching for the sky as big as a house and others much smaller & compact weeping to the ground. Mom and Dad's weeping mulberry produces little fruit while the huge 'reach to the sky' types drop scores of fruit everywhere, a feast for the birds and stains all over the sidewalks ...

Nancy, We had an enormous 50 -60ft mulberry tree(non weeping) growing in our front yard that was a head turner. Until a year ago last fall when husband played with some new power equipment (I was in complete agreement), but the results were shocking, as the tree was reduced to a 7ft stump with 4 or 5 large bare smaller stumps growing from it. The landscaper we hired the following spring for some back yard work held out very little hope for it's recovery or even a leaf. Well, it grew like a bad weed on steroids the next summer and we're contempating a good brushcut again early this spring - not quite so 'severe' but just for shaping. (ask me in a couple of months how we made out with that) Depending upon whether the tree is a 'must keep' or is expendable, your options are to have it removed at great expense, or pay someone to trim it, or take your chances & do it yourself and see how it turns out.

Why after 2 years did my weeping mulberry tree start growing straight up. How can it be pruned now?
