Hi there Jamie.. I wouldn't cut my cukes back.. i know they do spread and take up alot of room, my solution for that is i put posts behind where I plant them and page wire with a staple gun to attach it.. the cukes crawl up and dangle in the air and dont spread all over the ground.. makes for easy picking too and mice wont nibble on them.. my old garden had a fence behind the bed so I did the same thing but leaned the posts against the fence and they grew up on a slant, that was good too. For pumpkins I always cut them back or I would have a million of them.. I just leave enough vines with flowers for the amount of pumpkins I want and the rest I hack off.. it works fine and then the energy goes into those pumpkins instead of lots.. if I didnt do that they grow right out of the bed and onto the lawn!! Hope this is of some help.
