At a lower back corner of my yard I have been advised to plant a Golden Elder. I need it to cover an open area of fence. It should get ample rainwater and is next to my compost pile. Are there any negatives to this shrub that I should know about before getting it?

None that I know of Dave, sometimes it can look a bit ungainly but that's if you let it get out of hand. It accepts a lot of pruning and can be a beautiful accent piece. We have one trained as a standard. You may have heard some folks calling it Poor Mans Japanese Maple.
