How soon can I plant perennials? I know I should wait until the May long weekend to plant annuals, but does this timing also apply to perennials and shrubs?

new perennials need to be treated much like annuals. You should harden them off and wait for the ground to warm before planting.

I would only be concerned if the perennials had been forced and not exposed to outdoor temperatures at all. Most of what you'll get in outdoor nurseries now can go in the ground right away. You want the plant to get a chance to establish good roots before the really hot weather sets in.
