Pls suggest ground covers and vines for several pines. I thought Vinca may withstand the acidic soil etc. I'd like to grow some twining vines, like Scarlette Runners, through the pines, but the conditions are so tough. Suggestions?

I was always told "if you can't grow anything, put lamium! It grows and flowers in the shade and there are different varieties.

I'd second the lamium, and add geranium macrorrhizum, sweet woodruff and pachysandra for ground covers.

As far as vines are concerned, I don't think there's really anything that flowers that could survive because of the heavy shade, never mind the dryness and acidity. Virginia creeper and some ivys might survive, but scarlet runner beans need full sun.

I tried to grow all sorts of things under a blue spruce in Saskatchewan but nothing ever took. I didn't do any extra watering just whatever it got when I watered the lawn. We had cut out the bottom branches so the lower branches were 4-5' off the ground, after we did that we really wished we would have left it alone.
