We have two 1.3 metre high cedar trees in pots that have spent the summer on an apartment balcony. Can anyone suggest how best to prepare the trees for winter? Should we feed, water, cover, leave outside etc.

Best way is to place the cedars in the ground, and tons of water! Cedars dry out fast anyhow, plus being on a balcony means they have been subjected to extra drying due to wind and exposure. If you can't put them in the ground, then double up on the water, and somehow surround the pot with lots of protection. For instance, could you place the pots in big boxes and add lots of insulation between the box and the pot? Without this, be prepared for dead cedars by the spring, sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
