I've just been given a beautiful Nova Zembla rhododendron in memory of my father from my collegues at the office. It's currently in full bloom. Is there a danger to planting it now, or should I wait after it's finished flowering? I've read in this forum that the best time to plant is in the fall, but will it survive in its pot till then if I keep it watered? The soil in the pot looks to be a heavy clay soil, which isn't supposed to be the greatest. The plant is quite large, so I assume it's a few years old and was grown in a greenhouse locally (Toronto). Any suggestions are much appreciated. Dave

I have a rhodendron and when I got it, it was in full bloom (bought from a nursery)in the early spring and I just planted it there. It has been 3 yrs now and doing well. Just make sure when you plant it, that the root ball is broken up loosely so that the roots can spread, if not it could die in a few years. Also make sure that in the winter you protect it from the cold winds. We do a burlap ring (Stakes with the burlap attached and circled around the bush) to help protect it. Hopefully someone else can help you more, as I am not too good with explantions sometimes. Good Luck

Anytime is good. Plant it in a mixture of pine bark pieces, peat moss and your own garden soil, and with the top of the root ball slightly higher than it is in the pot. Needs good drainage and protection from winter / early spring sun. Burlap screen as mentioned. In your zone it should do well.
