I have had a Sweet Mock Orange for approx 3 yrs now and it has never had a blossom or flower. Is there some trick to getting it to bloom? I have also noticed some black looking aphids on the leaves - how do I get rid of them?

Hope someone can help - Thanks.

Linda

According to Readers Digest Guide to Gardening in Canada, this shrub should be planted in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. Prune AFTER flowering, not before, since blooms grow from previous year's wood. This might be your problem: have you pruned this shrub since you got it? You may have pruned away the flower buds. Flowering shrubs should only be pruned after they bloom. Good luck!

Thanks for answering. I have never pruned it as it never had blooms and it is planted in full sun with well-drained soil.

We inhereited an old mock orange when we bought our house 6 years ago. It was very congested and bloomed sparsely. We thinned it the first year and heavily the second and third year. It has sent up new shoots and made a fabulous comeback. But mine isn't blloming yet, and doesn't until later in June usually. To compare, my potentilla is and my lilacs have been in bloom for 1 week +. Dr. Doom works great for all sort of bugs. Nuke em :) (sorry; garden pests bring out the evil dictator in me) - sarah

Is it planted in your lawn and do you fertilize your lawn? Could be just to much nitrogen. This could also cause lots of nice new tender growth for for what sounds like wooly aphids to feast on. As far as the aphids go..there is alot of products on the market but just a good spray from your garden hose daily should do it.

It is planted in the lawn, but has a huge circle of earth around it - no grass. I am seeing some new shoots coming from the bottom. I started 2 new trees from this Mock Orange last year and they are doing pretty good - no too big yet, but getting there. They are not affected by the aphids. The fertilizer we use is Micacle Grow for both lawn and plants - is that OK - our lawn as never been greener.

I had the same problem, I planted two mock oranges when we moved in to our former home, four years later we sold that place and I never saw not one teeny tiny bloom on either of them...I wonder if the new owners had better luck.
