Subject: indoor herbs not looking good

I've been having trouble keeping my herbs alive on my windowsill. I have two green glass window containers in which I have planted thyme, basil, mint and oragano. I have beach pebbles in the bottom to promote drainage and a mixture of soil, perlite and compost. They do not thrive ... eventually rot and die .. even though I am careful not to overwater. Any suggestions?

It is so hard to keep those herbs going once the daylength gets so short.I wouldn't think they would get enough light from a windowledge. Are they all planted together? Perhaps not enough soil/nutrients to support them all. Also they are vigorous growers so maybe if you keep them trimmed back they would perform better.
