Hi everyone.

We are going to remove 840 sq ft of 8" think concrete that is around our pool. We have over 9 acres and was thinking that instead of paying the huge bin and dumping fees that there must be something I can do with this stuff on my very own property. My first thought was to dump it at the end of the lot, then to bury it in the same location and then.....I was wondering if I could dump it possibly in the same spot and then add some soil and then some plants of some sort. A concrete garden? Has anyone ever done this? I know that if I send it off site it will be recycled which is a good thing but with all the work that will still need to be done I was thinking we might be able to save $1000 if we left it here....just moved it around a bit and gave it a new job. Any idea's?

Thanks Mary

At a recent garden show, the homeowner had used her old concrete very creatively throughout her garden. Stepping stones, raised borders, mulch. It was beautifully done. I especially loved the little raised borders. She had laid the concrete flat, one piece on top of another so it almost looked like slate. Very nice.

I have seen broken concrete used as a low retaining wall in a magazine....sorry I don't remember which one. Anyways, they had planted low creeping plants in the cracks (thymus pseudolanuginosus, veronica repens, sedum, etc) as they assembled the wall. The plants eventually grew to cover the concrete. It was really quite attractive, so you may want to give it a try.

With 9 Acres, you could have a lot of uses. You could create a mound by piling the concrete on an area that you have removed the topsoil from then covering the concrete with the topsoil. The shape of the mound and the plant cover will be whatever your imagination comes up with.
