This is my second year for my hostas. One that I think is called "elephant leaf" has lots of white, dried patches that look quite ugly. The leaves are all curled. COuld this be some kind of disease or pest or are they too dry? Should I cut the leaves that have this on?

Certainly the condition as you described it is very unusual and almost impossible to diagnose unseen. The curled leaves suggest exposure to a herbicide which could also account for the dried patches; if the problem is confined to only a few leaves, removing them would not likely prove injurious to the plant. I would recommend taking them to a professional at a nursery/garden center for diagnosis.

Are the hostas in a sunny location? Sounds to me like the leaves may be getting sunburn.

Me again. The area is part sun and shade. The other hostas in the same areas are doing fine. Just wondering - could this be from dog or cat urine? I can't think of any herbicide or pesticide that could do this as I haven't used a thing. Should I remove the hosta in case whatever it is spreads????

I have hostas planted at our farm. It is located in zone 5a and it is very windy there. I noticed that the hostas were getting curled leaves and some white discoration on them. I thought it may be caused by the wind, so I put up a trellis fence to cut the wind. Since the wind also dries out the soil, I started to water more often. Since I've been doing this, I haven't noticed any more white patches. Hopefully this solved the problem. Hope this helps. marg
