Roberta, we are both Zone 5ers, so the first question that occurs to me: how many laburnums do you see growing in your area ??? And why are there not more ??? Garden Centers sell whatever their customers will buy assuming they have some idea how to take care of them unless they ask. Caveat emptor !

I'm glad to hear you had some success with it; don't let me discourage you from taking another crack at it. You might discover some pleasant surprises; I'm simply suggesting the odds are against it !

Roberta, obviously your microclimate can handle growing a laburnum. I am a firm believer in pushing the zone limits no matter where you are. It sounds like it is still alive, so that's a good sign. But definitely it took a hit from something.

Did it look sick? Any sign of pests?
