Subject: When are pansies safe outside?

I know pansies are resistant to cold, but at what point is it safe to leave them out in containers overnight? My containers are very heavy & I don't want to have to drag them inside every night.

I already have them outside in containers, and they are doing fine inspite of the ice storm, snow etc in the last few days.

Pansies will tolerate down to -4 degrees C with a minimum of damage if you properly harden them off and will bounce back from colder temps but look a bit worse for wear for a couple weeks. Even in my zone I will always plant pansies by the last week of April but we actually don't go frost free until last week of May/first week of June. If it gets too cool I'll cover them for the night. If your night temp. are not too bad go right ahead. It's kinda neat the looks you get from less adventureous neighbours!

We had 100% winter survival for the second year in a row of Icicle Pansies. Even if you're planting regular pansies, it won't get cold enough now to damage them in zone 5.

The local Communities in Bloom committee splurged on Icicle Pansies that were planted last fall with the expectation they would revive as perennials and provide a bonanza of spring bloom. As a member of the group, I was caught up in the fever and am experimenting with several flats in my own garden; the snow cover having just left, the jury is out. Their appearence is not promising, but optimism reigns supreme; what wonders a few warm days can perform !

I agree, pansies are way hardier than people generally think. Violas are even hardier and if you mass plant the same colour in a container, you get more colour impact. Here in Edmonton, I usually put them out as soon as they are for sale at local greenhouses(After hardening them off, of course) Usually mid to late April. They've tied over the colour void until annual planting begins in late May. Also remember that pansies are great for fall colour too! Start seeds in the middle of summer to plant out in fall for great colour till Thanksgiving.
