I garden just west of Peterborough and my rock garden needs a bit of a rethink this year. As I get older I find it more and more difficult to clamber over the rocks to maintain the garden. I am looking for suggestions for good, low maintenance rock garden plants which will like a south exposure and can compete with two nearby lilacs. I want something well behaved not a monster which covers the rocks! Thanks in advance.

Here are a few suggestions. lewisia, dwarf iris, dwarf columbine, wild ginger, barrenwort, saxifraga, candytuft, and even heather as it does not spread too fast, or at least not for me. I have all of these with south exposure but with partial shade.

Talk to "BLOSSOM HILL" on Fife's Bay Rd. very pleasant and knowledgable people, or join/attend a meeting of the Ont. Rock Garden Soc.,you will find either one very informative.

Pasque flower, scotch moss, New Zealand Bur, thrift, painted ferns (you might be surprised what they can accept in terms of light and moisture)
