I would like to plant more lilies this fall and am looking for some suggestions of your FAVORITES. I am in Zone 3a therefore require hardy varieties. Has anyone tried the L.A. Hybrids?

Also, any suggestions for Lily farms around Edmonton (or websites)??

Thanks!

Can you grow Regal Lilies? I see various and confusing information on hardiness for them in catalogs - some say zone 3 is possible, some say mulch needed and others don't give a hardiness rating at all. They are my favorite lilies because of their stately height (about 6 feet!); they look great against the house (NEED staking!); they have a heavenly scent in the evening; they have multiple blooms at once on the stalks and make fabulous boquets (although a bit overpowing indoors...); and, best of all, the lily bettles have totally ignored mine for the three years I've grown them!

Brenda R. If you want to get good information about lilies that grow in our zone, try contacting the Lily Nook in Neepawa. They have a website:http://www.lilynook.mb.ca/lily3.htm You can get a catalogie from them and order directly from them. Neepawa claims to be Canada's Lily Capital, so they would probably be a good source of information. Good Luck.

I have a booklet produced by the NorthAmericanLilySociety a few years ago with an address of POBox272,Owatonna,Mn 55060,Tel 507-4512170. They should know the regional societies - I know there is one in most of the provinces. I also know but nop longer have the list there are a number of lily grower/breeders in Alberta and Sask. Maybe you could locate a website - I have not found one .

I have been growing the Asiatic lillies for a number of years, and had very good luck. They have survived our severe winters.

The North American Lily Society is listed in the Clubs area on this site. They have a web site at:

The addresses/contact information for the Canadian affiated societies can be found at:

There is an Alberta branch listed in Sherwood Park.

I get confused between the asiatic and the oriental varieties...all seem to do well here in zone 5. But I've been particularly pleased with the variety Connecticut King, which is a beautiful glossy yellow, tons of blooms on the stems and seems to be multiplying rapidly in the four years I've had this one.

Hi Brenda....I have been growing lilies for about 12 yrs now. We are located 40 min. north of Edmonton. I have FARRRR (a couple thousand) to many on the acreage. I am going to be splitting them the first couple weeks of Sept. I have a surplus of asiatics. I have a vivid canary yellow, a bright orange and a bronze that are in particular abundance. If any of these colours interest you or anyone else send me an email and we may be able to work a trade or something. I have found the Orientals, LA Hybrids etc. will "sometimes" overwinter with a good mulching. They seem to make it thru what I think is a terrible winter but then don't come back from an easy one. The asiatics tho are next to unkillable. I have found them happily flowering away from a bulb 1 inch below the soil.

Hi Brenda. I have been growing the L.A.Hybrids since 1997 & I have had no problems at all. One that I find really impressive is 'Aladdin's Sun' L.A.Hyb. The blooms are HUGE & the bulbs multiply quite rapidly. I also grow asiatics & have tried orientals, but find the orientals a bit difficult for my zone. I order all my lily bulbs from 'The Lily Nook' that Barbara mentioned. Their catalogue is available online complete with pic's but you have to mail your order to them. Excellent site.

Sweetgrass Farm is a nice place to visit with loads of lovely lilies, located west of Edmonton off the Yellowhead . All 10 I purchased have thrived. They are a regular vendor at the St. Albert Farmers Market

Thanks everyone for your input.

Lynn, thank you for the offer but I am looking for pinkish colors this year.

I have gone to "The Lily Nook" website and it is great. They have excellent photos. I will give them a try this year. I will also go to Sweetgrass (thanks Peggy).

Happy Gardening!

P.S. The favorite lily I have in my garden is a DOUBLE yellow called "Fata Morgana". It does not have any stamens so there is no staining. It is proficient bloomer.

Happy Gardening!

I'm trying to find info on two asiatic lillies (so far that's all I've found out about them) called Tavello and Navona. Anybody have any info?

Navona is a pure white asiatic lily with a green throat.. grows to about 4 feet high.It blooms in June, with about 4 blooms. This lily is available to order from "The Lily Garden". I found "Tavello" on the plantlilies.com site and also from the "Lily Nook", it describes it as a pastel peachy-salmon colored asiatic lily with 8-10 blooms , wide petals, and grows to 3 feet high. The Lily Nook is in Manitoba and they do mail orders. Have not personally ordered from them myself but have heard favorable things about them. Navona is also listed with them so check it out!!! Hope this helps .
