Hi: Wondering if anyone has any hardy garden orchids growing. If so where did you plant them and how successful have they been? Thanks............Sue

Do you mean Bletilla striata? I've grown them quite successfully for several years now. I grow them in rather more shade than they're supposed to like - they're on the side of my rhododendron bank under my pine trees. The soil on the bank is a mix of triple mix, coarse peat, pine needles and mulched oak leaves. The hardy orchids are rather less 'showy' than I hoped they'd be (maybe they would be better in a sunnier spot....) What I really like is the hardy cyclamens (Cyclamen hederifolium) which grow in the same area. They are very pretty and unexpected when they blossom in the fall.

Thanks for your input Susan - yes that is it's name. I potted it up in the house a few weeks ago and it is peeking through now - I'll find a great spot for it - it was one of those plants that call your name at the garden centre - so I brought it home! Have never done anything with orchids before so looking forward to this one. Thanks Sue
