I have been reading about using layers of soaked newspaper covering unwanted vegetation(e.g., weeds, old grass or garden) as a non-dig way to start a new bed. You fertilize the old vegetation with something organic, smother it all with the newspaper, top with compost and new weedfree soil and plant immediately with seedlings or transplants. You don't have to wait for the newspaper and the underlying vegetation to break down. I would like to try this method to create a new patch of lawn. I was wondering if I could just broadcast grass seed on the 3 inches of purchased topsoil - or if 3 inches is deep enough? Does anyone have any experience?
