I am making a Japanese garden and we are going to try making a fountain from large bamboo plus ceramic container. Two 6 inch pieces of bamboo tied with copper wire holds water spout bamboo. Motor and plastic tubing is placed in water in ceramic container.

I did a very simple and effective in-ground fountain. You will need a very large bucket, a fountain-sized pump (about $10.00 in Home Depot), a good quality exterior extension cord, some screening and landscape fabric, and various sized rocks (smooth, not too big). Dig a hole, sink the bucket, put the pump on a brick or something to elevate it somewhat in the bottom of the bucket, add water as per pump instructions, cover with screening, back fill around the edges with some soil, cover with landscape fabric, and arrange the rocks to suit your prefence. I started with smaller ones at the edges (about 3 feet each side from the bucket edges), and gradually worked toward the centre, built up in the middle so that the spout was disguised. Very simple - I call it my "burble" - it gives a very pleasant, non-intrusive background noise to relaxing in the back garden. I also edged the upper rim of rocks with creeping thyme.

There are instructions for making several different kinds of fountains and water gardens on the Better Homes and Gardens web site. Some of the ideas are using pots, urns, tubs, strawberry pots and horse troughs. The link is http://www.bhg.com/bhg/category.jhtml?catref=C438

Dee your water feature really sounds good, As soon as it warms up I'm going to try to make one myself, is the screening that your writing about is that window screen? It would have been nice to see a picture, Thanks!

Hi Tonya - yes, I used the black window screening - you may need to experiment with thickness (how many times folded, so the water runs back into the bucket, and not off into the ground). If I had a scanner, and the no-how I would post a picture, but that's beyond me right now!! :) I think you will find that once you start, your own imagination will kick in - mine did.
