Subject: What kind of tree should I plant in Calgary?

We have a spot in our mature back yard that I would like to plant a tree in. I'm looking for something that will eventually provice privacy from the apartment building across the alley (approx 20 ft wide by 30 ft tall max). There is a birch (I think) on the other half of the yard. The spot is somewhat sheltered from wind, with full sun. Does anyone have an idea of what kind of tree I should plant there (I don't want one that grows slowly).

Try Mountain ash, or a crab apple variety, with crab apples you will have beautiful flowers in the spring. and than there is the tower popular fast growing tall and majestic. Jan

I would not usually suggest these trees for in town use but blocking an apartment building calls for drastic action.

Willows the big Laurel Leaf type grows big and fast, as do poplar and aspen. The last 2 live about 50 years. How long do you plan to live in this house?
