Has anyone had success with shrubs that can grow under a maple? I've had some success with mahonia but would love to expand my shrub border. Zone 6

I have had great success with Stephandra and Winterberry both thrive and flower well. They seem to hold their own even though planted directly in Maple roots. I just make sure they get lots of water during dry spells.

Ann, many thanks, I'll give those two a try. Maple roots have to be one of the MOST frustrating garden problems and most garden books appear to avoid the whole subject.( I think the experts are probably stumped too!)

Chris, I agree. I have 10 Mature maples and their roots spread miles (almost) Love the trees, not sure about all the leaf raking in the fall though!! We have also planted a hostalry and infernary underneath (attempt at humour) All do very well too.
