I would like to buy a book on garden pests and diseases which affect perennials. I'd like one that covers the subject well for the home gardener. Lots of pictures to ID, home remedies, plants that are susceptable, and so on. Does anyone have a winner they can recommend please?

Also on the topic of books, I found out the price for 'A-Z encyclopedia of Garden plants' and the 'Gardeners Encyclopedia of plants and flowers' Both were expensive, around $80.00, and were not available to browse through. If anyone has either of these publications could you give a quick points out of 10 evaluation.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Carol C

I just previewed "Reader's Digest New Illustrated Guide to Gardening in Canada", from the library. (that's if you reside in Canada). It was excellent and addressed all of your topics above. It is available at Price Club/Costco for 29.95 which I thought was reasonable for such a comprehensive resource.

The AMERICAN'S GARDEN BOOK by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Louis & James Bush-Brown, is an excellent book. It covers trees, shrubs, vines, perennials and annuals along with description of various pests and photos. It sells for around $60.00 for hard bound copy, or $35.00 for the paper bound copy. I highly recommend it.

Thank you both for your suggestions, both books sound great! If you have a moment could you please post the ISBN numbers? I did a search on Chapters online to see if I could locate either and my search came up empty handed. I'll keep looking.

Thanks Carol C

Hi Carol,

I don't think this is the same book as suggested earlier, but I have it and love it! It's the Reader's Digest 1001 Hints and Tips For Your Garden. ISBN # 0-88850-557-4. Hope that helps!

ISBN 0-02-860995-6 is the number for the AMERICA'S GARDEN BOOK by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It is the paper bound issue. Good luck finding it.

The Reader's Digest Ilustrated Guide to Gardening in Canada is a gem! I have a very modest collection of about a dozen gardening books, and this one is by far my favourite. The isbn is 0-88850-681-3. It is a comprehensive manual for the novice and experienced gardener both. I also have the 1001 Honts that Chris has, and although I like it as a reference, I find the New Illustrated much more detailed.

You can also call Reader's Digest at 1-800-465-0780 and request a copy of their catalogue. Finally, you can visit Reader's Digest at www.readersdigest.ca. Happy gardening from Bedford Nova Scotia!

If you have Save-On Foods in your area, be sure to check out their "Bruised & Battered" book bins. They're usually minor amounts of damage, but TREEMENDOUS savings!

This is a unique book i must say and only cost $2.00 and a little bit of my time. I have spent many hours on the internet learning about gardening as it is my first year. The information available out there is amazing. I decided to make my own book as there is hundreds of information pages available. I have printed out information sheets on all the perennials and annuals i have grown my first year and pest sheets and fertilizer information and sun versus shade plants. I have even drawn pictures of all the gardens and what i planted where and have kept notes on plants doing well and not so well and what not to plant next year. For each fact sheet that i have on a certian plant i have looseleaf pages which i keep notes on. All this information is divided into different sections and i can add daily notes or just review the info. It will come in handy this winter when i am planning next years gardens and i have saved alot of money on books which i can use for flowers next year. It's just a suggestion, but i love digging it out once in a while and reviewing what i have accomplished this past summer(which is labrador is only 4 months!) Happy Gardening everyone! Thanks again for all your wonderful gardening ideas and helpful information, i couldn't have done it without you.
