Children's Author, Shelley Awad Wins

Biz X Award for Best Writer
by Shelley Awad
November 28, 2011

Earlier this month I was notified that I had won the Biz X Award this year for Best Writer, and I couldn't have been happier! Here's what Biz X had to say: "Once again, the pool of talent in this category made the Judges' decision a difficult one but it was Shelley Awad's supporting letters of recommendations from young children (with comments like "awesome", "amazing", and "I read your book every night") for her series of children's books The Greenhouse Kids ("Dan Delion's Secret," "Ghost Walk") books that were first written and published by Borealis Press in 2009 and sparked a series of follow-up stories in 2010 and 2011.

In only two years Awad has become a best-selling author with over 6,000 copies sold and currently has a third instalment to her mystery/adventure series ("The Greenhouse Kids Dig Deep") coming out in late 2011. In addition to writing, Awad also founded the "Readers Grow Into Leaders" literacy program in 2010 (to date she has raised $10,000 worth of books through corporate and individual sponsors which were given to Grade 4 & 5 students at under-funded schools in our community and expects to raise another $10,000 in 2011). She also received the coveted "Parent Tested Parent Approved" Award in April 2011.

She is a graduate of the St. Clair College Journalism program, a member of the Canadian Children's Book Centre as well as the Women's Economic Forum, Better Business Bureau and local Chamber of Commerce. She has presented her books to students on several occasions through events at the Windsor Public Library, "Bookfest Windsor" and Science City. Judge Lepain spoke highly of Awad but it was Judge Barker that came to the table with great praise for her community support and ability to connect with her readers. "Shelley Awad takes the reader on a delightful quantum leap back to the days when a child's imagination branched out like ivy," believes Barker. "Awad's writing skills capture the attention of children and adults alike."
