How-To Tips from The Do-It-Yourself

Hooray for Pavé

Making arrangements in decorative gift boxes is easy, inexpensive and fun.

This design would make a beautiful and unique Valentine’s Day gift or party centerpiece. And in place of a gift box, you could use a heart shaped baking pan or serving piece. Check out the inventory clearance and craft stores. If using a gift box, you’ll need to use a watertight liner to hold your pre-soaked floral foam. Start your pattern in the center. Here I’ve used dahlias in various shades of pink and red. Note how they compliment the colors in the box. Working outward, continue to add rows of flowers, fruit, foliage…use your imagination.

You can even combine natural elements with artificial. The apples were inserted with bamboo skewers cut into several pieces. This would be pretty using all roses if you prefer. I love doing pavé because you can use all types of short stemmed materials. Even the kids can help. Just be sure to get the floral foam made for live, not artificial flowers. Add a festive ribbon or Valentine decoration if you’d like. Have fun!
