My Two Cents Worth
July 15, 2010

I received an email this week from June Harris, the editor of the Prairie Sage. She included an email that was sent to her from Gail Asper, a well respected lawyer in Canada (The Asper Foundation). It was regarding the plight of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the lady from Iran that is facing an uncertain future because she could still be stoned to death. Heather Reisman, the owner of Indigo.ca has put together a website on her. I include the text of the email and would ask that you feel the same way that many of us do, to please go to the site and sign the petition. Also please tell those who you know about this … I believe we can make a difference but we have to start. We are so very lucky to be living in a country where we do not have to face this. I cannot imagine what she is going through as she waits to hear her fate. Please also watch the two videos on the site ... they are an eye opener.

‘Dear UNIFEM Friends, (United Nations Development Fund for Women)

Please note the following request from Gail Asper -

I'm sure you have read about the situation of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman who is at risk of being stoned to death or executed for her alleged crime of adultery. It seems that I receive petitions almost on a weekly basis about women in other countries who are also about to be stoned to death. I think it is time that we recognize that we ought not to sit quietly by and allow 50% of the population in these countries to be treated so horrifically. The website established by Heather Reisman, one of the Museum's lead supporters (Canadian Museum for Human Rights), with her petition, is: http://freesakineh.org/ . I hope you will sign this petition and as important, I am asking for your real help. Please send it to your network and implore them to get involved. The goal of the petition is to have 1 million signatures, so every signature counts.

Any one who wants to contact Heather Reisman to raise any issue can do so hreisman@indigo.ca .

I think it would be wonderful if the world actually rose up to express their anger at this unacceptable treatment of women. A strong response to this petition will also send a message to our government that we encourage them to take action through the United Nations and potentially through boycotts of all countries that continue to treat women as chattel.
Thank you for your anticipated support. Gail Asper, O.C., O.M., LL.D.’
