Proven Winners

The Heat is On!

We will soon be in the official swing of summer, and our plants will need a little extra TLC from you if they are to survive the heat and humidity that comes with the season. A few tips:

  • Choose well. There are certain plants that can take the heat better than others. Many Proven Winners® varieties just keep on blooming in the high temps—three series to consider include Luscious Lantana, Flambe Chryscocephalum and Whirlwind Scaevola. Each will bring color all season long and can stand up to the brutal temperatures of a hot summer day.
  • Mulch, mulch, mulch. This helps the soil hold its moisture and will help prevent the plant from drying out quickly if in your landscape.
  • Weed frequently. Grab a cup of coffee in the morning before the heat sets in, and go pull the weeds that will draw moisture away from your plants. Remember to check your containers for weeds too….somehow they find their way to container plants too!
  • Feed your plants. Visit  and see what the recommended feeding schedule is for each plant. There you can also buy plant food online that is specially formulated to work wonderfully with all of Proven Winners’ varieties. A plant that might look like it has dried out one too many times may actually be suffering from a lack of nutrition. Some plants such as Supertunia® benefit from frequent feedings such as every week.
  • Water deeply. A brief sprinkle from the sky will not give your containers what they need to survive a 100° day.
