Organic Gardening Magazine Names 2009

Editor's Choice Award Winner

March 29, 2009

Spring is officially here and across the U.S., gardens are sprouting everywhere--from backyards to school yards, city parks to church parking lots. Even as prices rise in the produce department, the new spring season reminds us that we can all grow our own fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs. Raised bed planters can be set up almost anywhere--regardless of soil conditions and with less effort than digging--to transform even the smallest space into a lush vegetable garden.

Organic Gardening magazine has helped to take the guess work out of where to find top quality raised bed planters. Naturalyards received the 2009 Organic Gardening magazine Editors' Choice Award in recognition of their raised garden beds for outstanding innovation in product design, materials and performance. Naturalyards raised bed kits make it easy for both new and experienced gardeners to create a home, school or community garden.

The Editor's Choice award is given annually to products that excel under months of extensive field-testing conducted by Organic Gardening's team of editors and highly experienced test gardeners. With no set categories for the awards and no set number of recipients, the products and the testing process drive the award categories. Naturalyards raised garden beds was one of only eight awards given in 2009, and featured in the magazine's February/March 2009 issue.

"Organic gardeners are very conscious about their consumption--they want to buy only high-quality tools and other gear that are genuinely useful, versatile, and durable so they aren't replacing them every season," Organic Gardening Executive Editor Scott Meyer said. "We used these items hard in a variety of conditions so our readers can trust that they will work in their gardens for years to come."

The product testing process ensures that Naturalyards raised beds are truly worthy of distinction and meet the guiding principle behind the award program: garden tools that are of real value to the readers of Organic Gardening magazine.

"Urban gardeners often face issues of poor soil, lack of tools and limited space when trying to start a garden, while seniors tend to struggle with accessibility," Naturalyards garden expert Braxton Reed said. "With our easy-to-assemble kits, everyone can enjoy the benefits of a raised bed garden, such as improved soil conditions, higher yields, ease of access, better weed control and extended growing seasons."

Naturalyards produces tool-free raised bed kits in many shapes and sizes, from 2 to 30 feet long and 5.5 to 33 inches deep. The versatile design makes nearly any garden plan possible and beds can be assembled in minutes by simply stacking the precut boards on level ground and joining the corners with rust-free pins. Planters are made from durable Port Orford cedar, a naturally rot-resistant wood that lasts 20 to 30 years under normal outdoor conditions. Delivery is free to the contiguous United States.
