Canadian Roses Going to Russia

In May 2008, 32 Explorer rose cultivars - some 5 varieties - were taken to Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East - a gift from the Canadian Rose Society to a sister city of Victoria's. The selection of Explorers was most appropriate in view of the rather harsh climate of the destination. Imagine ground freezing to 2-3- meters in winter, and very hot, dry summers! The planting method incorporates principles of the EarthKind protocol - a subject to be presented at the Convention.

Experience the Rose from the Experts

Springtime and Pruning Roses - by Brenda Viney

There's no right or wrong way to prune and we all have our own ideas of how to do it. You can follow what is laid out ahead, or, as suggested by the Royal National Rose Society in England, you can use the "easy care method" on your modern roses. This consists of cutting the roses to half their height with pruners or a hedge trimmer, leaving all weak and twiggy growth on the plant. These roses flourish just as well as those pruned in the "traditional method"! Read more...

Pruning Your Roses - by Brad Jalbert

Pruning is a way of fine tuning and controlling the growth of your rose plants. It helps to reduce diseases, keeping the plant shape attractive and also regulates blooming. Proper pruning encourages the rose to make vigorous new shoots that will support larger flowers. Since we all want our roses to be healthy and to produce abundant flowers, pruning should be a job you love and face with confidence! Read more...

As an accompaniment, Brad wrote The 4D Rule Applies to All Roses, a few few points to remember when pruning different types of roses. Read more...

The Rose: War, Love and Peace - by Terri Clark

The more I experience life, the more I am convinced of the yin and yang philosophy therein. Out of pain comes comfort, and the deepest, darkest moments of war finally yield to joy, love and peace. Who would have thought amidst this that the rose would be so deeply ingrained in the history of man, more often than not, filled with war and inevitably followed by peace. Read more...

What do Maureen Sullivan and Constance Spry have in common? - by Terri Clark

Perhaps you are too young to remember the last century's doyenne of flower arranging, Constance Spry. At the very least you will recognize her moniker thanks to the lovely pink rose named for her by the ubiquitous David Austin. Read more... Visit the Marketplace
