Horticulture Partners Team Up to Fight Breast Cancer
by Danielle Ernest
February 15, 2009

On February 28, during the second day of the Yard, Garden and Patio show held in Portland, Oregon. Proven Winners® and Bauman Farms of Gervais will give away a free Flirtation™ Pink Diascia plant, a new Proven Winners variety for Spring 2009, to the first 1,000 attendees of the show to raise money to help stop breast cancer.

Brian Bauman, Owner and Manager of Bauman Farm and Garden stated, "Proven Winners’ generous support has allowed Bauman's Farm and Garden an opportunity to put not only a beautiful plant, but also a constant reminder of the impact of breast cancer in the hands of a 1,000 people. We realize that one plant is a small reminder, but by doing the little things we all can make a big difference."

“We thank Bauman’s Farm and Proven Winners for their donation. Our foundation is committed to fund the progress of breast cancer treatment and research, but also to raise awareness and help educate individuals in early detection”, stated Kris Knox, President of The Linda L. Vladyka Breast Wellness Foundation.

Each Proven Winners Flirtation™ Pink Diascia will have a tag stating “plant this in hope and memory of those affected by breast cancer” and will invite attendees to Bauman’s booth (867). Bauman’s will then donate 5% of all product sold during the show to The Linda L. Vladyka Breast Wellness Foundation. This donation will fund monthly self-breast exam training throughout the coming year. The foundation, in cooperation with the Salem Cancer Institute, has created a brilliant way to discuss a topic that is uncomfortable for most women to do in large settings. By having in-home parties similar to Tupperware or Pampered Chef, women will learn the most accurate, thorough method of self-breast exam, thus giving them a relaxed, comfortable environment surrounded by friends and loved ones to discuss this intimate subject.

ABOUT BAUMAN FARMS: Bauman's Farm and Garden started in 1895 and four generations later it stays true to its roots by producing high-quality products at reasonable prices. In 1987, the Bauman Family started their own Farm Direct Market as a small roadside stand. Today, the small roadside stand has transformed into a multifaceted operation that includes: a nursery, display garden, petting zoo, bakery, apple cider press, and country store. The family prides itself on growing and producing most of the products they sell and that is why they say, "Our Family Growing for Your Family."

ABOUT LINDA L. VLADYKA FOUNDATION: Play for the Cure™ is an adult, slow pitch softball tournament held every August at Wallace Sports Complex in Salem, Oregon. The tournament is an opportunity to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is our primary beneficiary. Last year was our 7th annual tournament where a combination of 34 co-ed and women's teams competed to "strike out" breast cancer. Over the last seven years, our foundation has donated a total of $100,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
