Hanging Basket Favorite Bacopa

now available from seed
by Thompson & Morgan
September 28, 2008

For many years gardeners have been growing the hanging basket favorite bacopa with its cascading habit and pure white blooms from cuttings. Now for the first time bacopa is available from seed. Because the seed of this species is very small, breeders have cleverly combined a cluster of seeds in a multi-pellet for easy sowing. These multi-pellets are ideal for sowing into individual cells or Jiffy 7’s, removing the fiddly task of transplanting seedlings. Once the plants are large enough, these cells or Jiffy 7’s can then be easily transplanted into baskets, Flower Pouches™ or window boxes.

New for 2009 Thompson and Morgan is introducing two different colors of seed-raised bacopa, Bacopa ‘Snowtopia White’ (Bacopa cordata ‘Snowtopia White’) and Bacopa ‘Blutopia Blue’ (Bacopa cordata ‘Blutopia Blue’) (Syn Sutera cordata).

These two delightful snow-white and lilac-blue selections grow to just 2-6 inches (5-15cm) in height, but will cascade over the sides of baskets up to 18 inches (45cm) in diameter.

Bacopa ‘Snowtopia White’ and Bacopa ‘Blutopia Blue’ will look spectacular when planted on their own as a feature basket or Flower Pouch™, but are equally at home when added to other planting combinations in mixed baskets or containers. Each bushy green plant is quickly transformed into a cloud of tiny white or lilac-blue flowers, providing a colorful display all summer.

Bacopa multi-pellets are best sown from January to March onto the surface of moist seed starting mix or Jiffy 7’s. The seeds must not be covered as they need light to germinate. Place into a heated propagator or on a warm windowsill at a temperature of 68-75°F (20-23°C) until after germination, which only takes 5-10 days.

#4690 ‘Blutopia Blue’ or #4658 ‘Snowtopia White’ $4.95 for 10 multi-pellets. Half-Hardy Annual. Thompson & Morgan is offering gardeners the chance to grow both colors of Bacopa including one packet each of ‘Blutopia Blue’ & ‘Snowtopia White’ at a special offer price of $8.90.

Two more tremendously popular varieties for baskets and Flower Pouches™ are Petunia ‘Purple Velvet’ and Petunia ‘Salmon Velvet’, the best trailing petunias from seed. Rivaling expensive cutting-raised Surfinia petunias, these two spectacular varieties will flower continuously through summer into autumn on trailing stems up to 3 feet (1m) in length. Half-Hardy Annual #4614 ‘Salmon Velvet’ or #4252 ‘Purple Velvet’ $3.95 for 12 seeds.
