Astilbe chinensis Diamonds and Pearls

...2007 Plant Introduction
by Miriam Young
January 21, 2007

It’s been a long time coming, but in 2007 the first chinensis species Astilbe with pure-white flowers will be introduced.

Until now, varieties from species have been typified by pink and purple flowers, but Dutch breeder Harrie Verduin’s painstaking crossing and selection work has revealed this unexpected possibility.

Astilbe chinensis ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ has many long, upright plumes of large-petaled silver-white flowers, which are held on very thick stems above the dark-green foliage.

This is a great development for fans of this shade-loving genus, as chinensis is the most robust of the Astilbe species, holding up better when faced with heat, sunlight and not enough water. This all adds up to ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ being the strongest pure-white-flowered Astilbe there is!

Plant height: 28”
Plant width: 22”
Blooming time: July-August

Astilbe chinensis ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ will be sold as a Darwin PlantSpotters variety from Spring 2007. The full story about its development will be published on www.plantspotters.com. Check this site too for a list of possible retail suppliers.
