ICanGarden Press Release
January 9, 2001 Launches New, More Interactive Site

December 14, 2000, Edmonton, Alberta, -- the leading site for gardening information in Canada, launched a new version of its site today, just in time to assist gardening enthusiasts as they begin planning their gardens for 2001.

“We are so excited about the new look and feel of the site,” says Donna Dawson of “Most of all,” says Donna, “We are eager to let gardeners know how incredibly dynamic the site is now.”

The revised site features a fresh look. Visitors to the site voted on two design possibilities for’s new look. “It’s funny,” says Donna, “people liked both sites so much, there was no clear winner. So, we incorporated the look of Choice A with some of the colours of Choice B. Colour is, of course, a very important feature to gardening enthusiasts.”

A major upgrade to the site is the ability for each gardening community across the country to update their own information. “This means, each gardening club in each community can maintain their own site, posting their own milestones, events, meetings, and so on,” continues Donna. There are almost 350 gardening clubs listed on to date.

The Event area will now be much more interactive, where gardeners will be able to post their own event information on lectures, shows, master gardener meetings, etc.

The search utility has also been upgraded. “The search bar will now allow you to search for items either by category, for example roses, or by author of an article, books on the subject etc. A number of regular visitors to the site suggested this upgrade.”

The Forum was also upgraded. “The Forum is a key feature of our site,” continues Donna. It allows gardeners with a problem or question to post questions. “Even if other gardeners can’t provide a solution to the problem, they may have experienced the same challenges and can at least provide moral support.”

“The winter months are a creative time for gardeners,” concludes Donna, “So, it was important to me that we launch these improvements as soon as possible.”

Several new areas will be introduced in 2001, including development of e-commerce functionality for catalogues, personal web sites for gardeners to participate in the community and more interactive/ real-time content features. was launched in 1996 by Donna Dawson, a master gardener in St. Albert, Alberta. Her desire was to provide information unique to Canadian gardeners. Today, is Canada's largest Internet Gardening Resource site.
