Update - Prairie Naturals Gardening Group

...the next three meetings...
by PNGG
October 17, 2021

Hello Members of PNGG

I'm in the middle of selling our house, packing and moving...to BC! At least for the winter. So here's what's happening over the next three meetings in case I don't get the computer unpacked...

Save October 21 for a seminar on design with Lyndon Penner

Lyndon Penner grew up in Saskatchewan and has been gardening since he was a small child. At 16, he began working in the greenhouse industry and at 20, he began teaching horticultural classes at the University of Saskatchewan. Choosing to make gardening his career, Lyndon has been a professional gardener for 20 years now and has also done botanical interpretive work in the Canadian Rockies and at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge.

A popular guest speaker and lecturer for universities, colleges, and horticultural societies, Lyndon has written several best-selling books about gardening in short season areas and has also been a CBC radio columnist. He currently lives in rural Manitoba and is now the head gardener for Riding Mountain National Park.

On October 21, he will speak to the Prairie Naturals Gardening Group and friends about Designing with Native Plants.

November 18 - Virtually, bring a friend and enjoy the seminar together

November is time to renew memberships and encourage new members to join Prairie Naturals Gardening Group. In line with the Group’s tenet, learning by doing and sharing, each Prairie Naturals Gardening Group member is encouraged to invite a friend to share in the learning. There will be no fee for guests for this meeting.

Whether new to native gardening or an old hand, you will enjoy this seminar as well as know what's to come with membership to the Prairie Naturals Gardening Group in 2022.

John Morgan, President of Prairie Habitats Inc will talk about native Manitoba plants, including their historical, conservation, aesthetic and wildlife habitat values, and will describe his experience in using native plants for gardens and for prairie restorations. John has new information to share with us, showing the results of prairie plantings years later. Michele Taylor, founder of PNGG, will give a brief retrospective of the first two years for the Prairie Naturals Gardening Group, and focus on the plans for the year to come. Michele and John will be joined by some special guests, who will join in this casual and informative presentation.

December 16 - December Delights of the Tall Grass Prairie with Illinois resident Cindy Crosby

A great way to end 2021 and begin dreaming about 2022. Make yourself a cup of tea, snuggle under a warm afghan, and join prairie steward and writer Cindy Crosby virtually for this interactive online immersion into the tall grass prairie in winter. See the aesthetic beauty of the snow-covered grasses and wildflowers in cold weather through colourful images of winter on the prairies. Follow animal tracks to see what creatures are out and about, and see how many you can identify. Learn how birds, pollinators, and mammals use winter prairie plants; the seeds for nourishment and the grasses and spent wildflowers for overwintering, protection, and cover. Then, listen as Cindy shares brief readings about the prairie in winter that will engage your creativity and nourish your soul.

Cindy Crosby https://cindycrosby.com/ teaches natural history for The Morton Arboretum, Wild Ones Native Landscape groups, Sierra Club, The Illinois Extension, Illinois Garden Clubs, and other organizations. She has a master's degree in natural resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and is a Master Gardener.
