NEW - Veterans Gardening Guide
May 13, 2018

The Veterans Gardening Guide is a compilation of gardening articles that author, Peter Prakke has written through the years. The book contains a tremendous amount of indoor and outdoor gardening information for novice to experienced gardeners. It’s a handy reference that can be used to either plan a first garden or to update a current landscape. Throughout the book, plants have been ranked (low to high in allergens) based on the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale (OPALS®) developed by horticulturist, Thomas Ogren. There are millions of people with allergies, asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Pollen levels in the city and urban areas are high and are worsening due to global warming and the interaction with urban air pollution. The ultimate goal is to encourage all gardeners to create a healthy balance with their plant choices. They can only do so if they know what the OPALS rankings are within their gardens.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peter Prakke was born and educated in Eibergen (Gelderland), in the Netherlands. Since graduating from agricultural college, he has worked in agriculture, husbandry, and horticulture in the Netherlands, England, Kuwait, and Canada. He proudly created the Plant a Tree – Create a Park© program in Smiths Falls, Ontario where he and his wife raised their family. Most recently Peter started the Bravery ParkTM initiative to honour veterans in allergy-friendly park settings. The first two bravery parks are in Orangeville, Ontario, and Prince George, British Columbia. Peter works tirelessly to promote allergy-friendly landscapes in schoolyards and private- and government-owned properties.
