Sunshine, flower shows and horticultural highlights give RHS Gardens highest visitor numbers ever with more than 1,760,000

RHS Gardens had their most successful year ever, with more than 1,760,000 visitors coming to RHS Gardens Wisley, Rosemoor, Harlow Carr and Hyde Hall between February 2014 and January 2015. The record breaking figure was a 9% increase on 2013 and beat the previous record of almost 1,644,000 visitors which was set in 2009.

RHS Garden Wisley, the Society’s flagship garden in Surrey did particularly well with over a million visitors this year and the RHS’s newest garden, Hyde Hall in Essex, has seen a massive increase of 41% over the last two years. Rosemoor in North Devon has increased its numbers by 18% over two years and Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire has seen a whopping 29% growth in visitors over the last four years.

An inspiring programme of horticultural events throughout the year made sure that visitor numbers were not too weather reliant. The Hyde Hall and Wisley Flower Shows have grown in popularity year on year with both now attracting over 66,000 visitors combined. Visitors to Butterflies in The Glasshouse at Wisley in early spring, increased in 2014 by 37% after timed tickets and art exhibits were added. World-class horticultural displays at the gardens continued to inspire and delight with an Award of Garden Merit Tulip Trial at Wisley and the improved Winter Walk at Harlow Carr proving particular draws. The completed Mediterranean Garden at Rosemoor and the Dry Garden at Hyde Hall were also especially popular.

Sue Biggs, Director General of the RHS, said: “It’s been a cracking year with a warm sunny spring, great events and of course the beautiful gardens themselves helping attract the record breaking number of visitors we have seen. I’d like to thank everyone who works on our breathtaking horticulture, diverse events programme, garden-inspired catering and fantastic shops and plant centres. It is the hard work, passion and dedication of this team of people that makes a day out at an RHS Garden such an unforgettable experience and has helped us to have our busiest year ever.”
