America in Bloom Releases Two New Books
by America in Bloom
October 12, 2014

America in Bloom executive director, Laura Kunkle, said, “America in Bloom is excited to announce the release of two new books. The first is an annual addendum to our popular Best Ideas book which includes more than 2000 best practices and photos from America in Bloom participants. This special edition was created in response to multiple requests for annual updates and features one ‘best idea’ for each of the 33 participants of 2014. In addition, a special mention by the judges is included as well as photos from each town. It’s exciting to read about what other towns are doing to improve quality of life, engage volunteers, and make progress in all the areas on which they’re evaluated including heritage, environment, urban forestry and horticulture.”

Printing of the book was sponsored by Mountain Mechanical Company which has observed the benefits of the America in Bloom program in several of the cities where they operate. The book was created by AIB judges and volunteers – Leslie Pittenger and Evelyn Alemanni.

Alemanni was responsible for the concept and design of the original Best Ideas series of books.

The second book titled “Perspectives on Planting Pride” is a compilation of articles and essays by AIB past president, Dr. Marvin N. Miller. Included are his thoughtful reflections and impressions of gardening, life, and current research in the field of horticulture and how it affects communities and individuals. The forward to the book was written by Charlie Hall, Ph.D. AIB president and Texas A&M University Professor and Ellison Chair in International Floriculture.

Dr. Miller served on a volunteer basis as America in Bloom’s president for ten years and continues to be involved with the program. He is market research manager for Ball Horticultural Company in West Chicago, IL.

The book was conceived and designed by AIB board member Evelyn Alemanni.

Both books are available for purchase on the AIB website and on
