Introduction to the Society for Allergy Friendly

Environmental (SAFE) Gardening
September 22, 2013

I'd like to introduce you to a new non profit organization, the Society for Allergy Friendly Environmental (SAFE) Gardening.

Each year pollen allergy seasons are getting more intense, and they're getting longer. Both allergies and allergic asthma continue to increase rapidly. A growing number of people (the numbers may well be in the many millions, as more than 38% of Americans now suffer from pollen allergies) are starting to see trees, flowers, shrubs, vines, lawns, landscapes, parks, not as their friends, but as the enemy that makes them feel miserable. To quote from one allergy sufferer in a recent CBS news release - "Trees, bushes, anything that gives off pollen. I try to stay away from that stuff."

This is an absurd situation, and in large part it has been driven because the nursery industry has for so long now propagated and sold vast numbers of highly allergenic clonal male landscape plants. Along with all these allergenic plants in the landscape we now have climate change, global warming, and increased C02.

We need to get back to the point where people see live plants as essential, as highly important, as necessary for quality of life, and most of all, as something that is friendly to them.

Please take a look at our website. It's very new and not at all extensive yet, but we'll be adding to it on a regular basis. We are looking for like minded individuals and organizations to work with closely . Please drop us a line, we'd love to hear from you.
