Thompson Okanagan: Vernon's Farmers Market Springs to Life
by Carla Mont
April 28, 2013

: For the folks in Vernon, the changing season promises more than just the darling buds of May. Indeed, a rise in temperature brings another welcome sight to the community, north of Kelowna: the return of the perennial, crowd-pleasing Vernon Farmers Market. As one of the oldest and biggest markets in the Okanagan, this gathering of more than 100 producers, growers and artisans has carved its niche in the orchard-fringed countryside, thanks to an eclectic lineup that sets up shop every Monday and Thursday, April through October. More than 1,600 daily shoppers browse the stalls at this gathering, snagging everything from jars of goodness from Olga's Preserves and wild BC salmon and shrimp from Fisherman's Catch to herbs and plants from Quail's Farm, organic beef and lamb from Vale Farms and samosas and pakoras from Meenu Indian Cuisine.

There's local fruit and veg galore, plus plenty of nuts, dairy and fresh-baked goods up for grabs. And for those looking for a keepsake that doesn't fall into the edible category, keep an eye out for soothing body products from Om Naturale, pottery from Out of the Fire, bonnets by 4 Penny Girl and jewelry by Boho Chic. Tip: you might want to bring every canvas bag you own.
