Chenies Manor

1pt.gif (86 bytes)What a wonderful garden (am I beginning to sound a bit boring :) hope not, but I can tell you that is really was ... the house has some incredible history associated with it as well ... this house is listed in the Doomsday survey! The earliest architectural remains are those of a 13th century crypt. They think this was the cellar. The latest additions and changes were made to the house in 1526. One of the most interesting things about this house is the chimneys - see the picture - do they look familiar - like those of Hampton Court? Well, they were built by the same workmen who were enlarging Hampton Court for Henry VIII.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)Henry VIII used to come here along with Anne Boleyn and the infant Elizabeth (in 1534). Then in a later visit he came here with Kathryn Howard (who was carrying on an affair with one of the King's attendants, Thomas Culpeper) It culminated in her adultery, Chenies being one of the places where this took place.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)The first, second and third Earls of Bedford made Chenies their principal home. The third Earl succeeded in 1585 at the age of 12. He is best known for his plot against Queen Elizabeth and for having married Lucy Harrington (whose father invented the water closet). Midsummer Night's Dream was written for their marriage.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)There is a picture of a small window, the only window on the south side of the house and added much later ... you see the winds blew from London and they didn't want windows on this side because they were worried about diseases coming in the wind.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)Now the garden ... I am including a few pictures to give you a taste of what we saw and what you can expect next year ... one of them is of Liz, one of our group and you can tell she is very happy to be there!
