October 15th Durban
Today we visit the Makaranga Gardens. Makaranga is set in a
tranquil private botanical garden located in the subtropical
village of Kloof within the Valley of a Thousand Hills. 30 Acres
of indigenous and exotic botanical gardens, 18 ponds, meandering
streams and a waterfall await your discovery and offer you their
joy and healing. Experience the largest collection of Zimbabwean
stone art in Southern Africa as well as hand selected Italian
sculptures. An enchanted garden…

Time to wander the gardens on your own and everyone totally
loved it here. We also enjoyed lunch overlooking the gardens.
Nabygelegen Gardens was our next visit and Lida was there to
meet us and show us around. Rather formal in look and full of
roses. The huge hedging takes good care of the noise that comes
from the highway directly behind them. It was a lovely visit and
she was a very gracious host.
We finish our day with a visit to the Tatham Art Gallery - The
Gallery owes its origins to Mrs Ada Susan Tatham who collected
donations early in 1903 and purchased works in Britain later
that same year. After an initial exhibition the collection was
first housed in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. In 1923 the
collection was greatly enhanced through the donations of
Lieutenant Colonel R.H. Whitwell. Let it be known that the gift
shop was excellent as many of my past tour guests can attest to.

suspected from our previous visit here there were many items
bought in the gift shop…
