This page shows a continuation of our time yesterday at the 1 Utama…even the washrooms were classy with different kinds of products that you could try, and try we did….just look at all the floors in this mall…mind boggling.

Our first stop today is the Petronas Towers. This offers you’re a beautiful view of the city as you stand on the 42nd floor. The skyway is actually two stories tall one the walkway on top of us is for the tenants of this building…high security here as there are many huge companies with offices here. Even from the 42nd floor you have to admit it is a pretty impressive view.

From there we went to the Bintang Revolving Restaurant at the Federal Kuala Lumpur for lunch and after this to the Hibiscus Garden and the Orchid Garden, two of my favorites. Again I had been to both before. One of our group checked out Bird Park which is also and he, and expert birder, loved it.

A bit more sightseeing followed after this, including seeing the strands of jasmine buds that are made up for people to take to the temples. You can hardly see that lady but for her wonderful smile.

Our last day…dinner was at Precious Old China Restaurant and it was over…so many miles we had travelled on this tour. So many experiences that we will never forget. So many unforgettable memories of warm and happy people. So much good food!! It was as I had remembered and yet always so much more. Hope you get a chance to visit Malaysia, truly Asia…

So many people to thank as well…most of all Sandra at Tourism Malaysia Vancouver, for putting this delightful tour together so we could experience Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak.

NOTES:

  • Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the current Prime Minister of Malaysia, is the eldest son of Malaysia’s second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak and nephew to the thired Prime Minster Tun Hussein Onn. He became a Member of Parliament in 1976 at the age of 23, he was the youngest member ever to be elected. He was also the youngest deputy minister in the country when at 25 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Energy and Telecommunications. He is the one who introduced the 1 Malaysia concept with the slogan ‘People First, Performance Now’

  • ‘For the roof top garden at 1 Utama, a horticultural carbon has been developed using charcoal briquette manufactured from sawdust. It has been used successfully with different proportions of clay soil to grow a variety of plants to create a rooftop garden and an indoor tropical rain forest at the shopping mall in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.’ >From the Journal of Science and Technology in the Tropics, 2009

  • In the Iban community in Sarawak that we visited, one of the popular dishes they like to eat are sago worms, with soy sauce and ginger, or grilled. We were not offered any… the worm is the Capricorn beetle larvae that live and feed off the pulp of the trunk of the sage palm. It has a plump yellowish body with a hard shelled head. It’s a personal taste to get used to.

  • We were there during a holiday so got to taste a lot of things that are only available at that time. one is called ketupat, a savoury rice compacted through the use of coconut leaves that have been woven in the shape of a square pouch. This is fast becoming a dying art because it takes so long to make them. It is usually served as an accompaniment not only to satay but with rendang.

  • On July 27th, 1960 the hibiscus was chosen at the National Flower

  • “It is of such an excellent taste that it surpasses in flavour all the other fruits of the world’ a British traveler in 1599. Now he was speaking of the Durian. I have tasted this fruit and all I can say is that you should not have it in the morning. It tastes a bit like onion and garlic and would have tasted better in the afternoon. Also to note, durian and mangosteens are not allowed into any hotel room. Mangosteen juice is so bad it will stain anything. You can smell a durian a mile away. I do not dislike them, in fact I enjoyed the custard like feeling in my mouth, just not the taste of garlic so early in the day and needless to say my buddies did not like the smell I brought back with me.
