Ecuador Tour 2013
January 11th – 20th, 2013

January 16th

Up very early to leave for our flight to Cuenca…a 35 minute flight. A beautiful flight as most of the clouds were under us and bright white clouds really showcased the mountains that were tall enough to peek through the clouds. We even saw one of the volcanoes spouting off with a huge dark cloud coming out of the crater. Once landed we sent the bags to the hotel and headed off to Ecuagenera Orchids where we were met by Ivan Portilla, one of the brothers who owns the place. We then went to the house to have a snack before heading out to see some of the greenhouses…Wow, talk about orchid overload. Batteries died just taking so many pictures. This company is over 50 years old and has a great history. The Portilla family own it and with 6 brothers and 4 sisters, it is a large family to take care of a very large business. Not all work for the company but those that do are just so passionate…you know what it’s like…you have done the same thing…you are so passionate about your own garden and plants in it, you want to show anyone the whole thing! Here is it huge so we picked the greenhouses that had the most plants in bloom. Ivan was an excellent guide for us, showing us such tiny little orchids that without his help, we never would have seen them.

It was lunch time so back to the house for a wonderful and filling lunch including a dessert made with Ecuador’s 70 percent chocolate and Kahlua. Well, after this no one wanted to move, but we had three more greenhouse to visit so off we went and boy were they wonderful. It is amazing how your energy can come back when you are excited about something.

After this visit it was on to the hotel for a long awaited rest and dinner.
