Common Name: Pink Snowberry
bluelight2_tb.jpg (7170 bytes)

  • Symphoricapros (snowberry) belongs to the family Caprifoliaceae, the honeysuckles, and is native to North America. 'Marleen' requires no special soil and is winter-hardy. It thrives in sunny places or in partial shade and is excellent for gardens, parks and public green spaces.

The broad, standing shrub forms slightly bent branches with blue-green leaves. It flowers from June to September, bearing a profusion of bright pinkish-purple berries of breathless beauty which you will be able to enjoy right up to December. For best results 'Marleen' can be cut back to a height of 25 centimetres in February or March.

The plant grows up to 110 centimetres high and the planting space is 80 centimetres.

This new snowberry is very suitable as cut flowers.
  • Award of Merit (1996) adjudged by the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society.
  • Raiser/Owner: C.M. Arisz, Beverwijk, the Netherlands.
  • Origin: spontaneous seedling, almost for certain of S. x doorensbosii ‘ Mother of Pearl’
  • Habit: broad upright shrub to about 1.0m high with arching, brown to brownish-red branches.
  • Leaves: opposite, round to broad-ovate, 3-4 (-5) cm long, dark bluish-green underneath light greyish-green.
  • Flowers: small, whitish-pink, June-September.
  • Fruits: at the end of the branches in clusters together, more or less globose (8-) 10-12 mm in diameter, bright purplish-pink (RHS CC 70B, Red-Purple Group), September-November (-December).
  • A compact growing shrub with striking bright purplish-pink berries in great abundance. This cultivar has been used in the florist industry as a cut stem in floral arrangements.
  • While the Florist industry recognized the beauty and importance of this cultivar, the nursery industry has only recently recognized the potential for the homeowner, who can grow this highly ornamental shrub and cut their own stems for the development of a homegrown Floral Bouquet.
  • The size, multitude and color of the berries as well as the cut stems which have a vase life of up to three weeks make this cultivar a "must have" for the gardener who enjoys growing their own Floral Bouquet.
  • Marleen is subject to Plant Breeder Rights. Propagation is prohibited.
  • Canadian Zone 3b, U.S.D.A. Zone 4
  • Growers of: Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii " Marleen" ™
