Cornus alba "Cream
Cracker" p.p. 12830 ™ is a recent recipient of the Award of Merit, Royal
Boskoop Horticultural Society, The Netherlands.
Description : An upright deciduous hardy shrub 80cm
height x 100cm wide. Zone 3
Leaves are green with creamy colored margins on the older growth. New
growth is green with golden yellow margins. The stems are purplish-red
in the winter, which is a nice addition of color in the winter garden.
Breeder: Mr. John Pannebakker, Hazerswaude, The
Netherlands
Habit: At first appearance it appears to be Cornus alba
elegantissima and Cornus gouchaulti in the same plant but it is actually
a genetic sport of Cornus gouchaulti.
Position: The clump forming species Cornus alba
tolerate poor, thin, shallow, dry or wet soils and full sun to shade.
Dogwoods grown for their colorful stems will give the best displays if
they are pruned back hard every year, to within a few inches of the
ground in early Spring. Proper pruning will produce a dense clump of
upright, whip-like stems that are brightly colored.
Planting: Ensure the compost is moist and remove pot.
Dig a hole large enough to accommodate roots. Back fill with soil and,
if desired, compost-fertilizer. Firm well and water in. Should be
planted at depth where soil just covers the compost. Water until
established.
