Artist's Portfolio
Born in Yorkshire, England, Jennifer has traveled and studied extensively. Possessing an Honors Arts degree from both the University of Guelph and Georgian College, her artistic personality emerges from a background of regional and international influences. Memories of childhood gardens and the antiquity of England echo through her timeless work. Her work is renowned and respected both locally and across the nation.
For over 25 years Jennifer Lawson has been mixing pure colours with clear water to capture her intimate vision of a world of softened light. Victorian houses, country gardens in fresh bloom, come to life under Jennifer Lawson's brush.
Jennifer paints solely in watercolor on pure rag paper. She is a location painter and can often be seen with her easel, palette and her hand-made sable brushes intently working in front of a house whose charming aspect has caught her imagination. The effect is romantic and impressionist, capturing the special play of light and shadow in the breeze of a sunny summer day.
One of Jennifer's specialties is commissioned painting of homes and gardens. An avid gardener, Jennifer can readily understand your garden ideas; she can paint your landscape from your plans and dreams, long before it blooms.Jennifers watercolours portray delightfully positive imagery and a clarity of surfaces that have shimmer and luster - refined brushwork - showing patience and purpose. The ephemeral, seemingly breathless beauty of this medium is intensified by her powerful mastery of colour. Her refreshing style - a perfect blend of beauty and inspiration - helps you feel the strength and joy she brings to all her work. She is an artist, gardener, naturalist - painting on location is her love. Her house is like an extension of her paintings and she finds much inspiration in her own garden - visitors are always charmed by it.
She exhibited at the Northwest Flower Show in Seattle and found it very inspirational. Jennifer also carries t-shirts, cards and bags along with her work! Butchart Gardens carries her line and she will be demonstrating there again in September.
"While my mode of expression is largely representational, my work is intuitive rather than strictly realistic, in that I base many of my creative decisions on my feelings about a subject. My explorations of nature, made while painting, gardening and traveling continue to be a boundless source of inspiration, and have developed in me an appreciation for what I have come to recognize as an ongoing creative alliance. Watercolour - perhaps the most responsive art form - is particularly suited to convey the feelings evoked by the moods of nature - the changing seasons and the fleeting beauties of the weather. I follow the impressionist philosophy of painting and I paint my first impressions of a subject. A trip to Europe and Britain's galleries and museums at age 16 changed my life: the master's watercolours spoke eloquently of the ephemeral, seemingly breathless beauty of this medium.
Possessing an Honours Art Degree from U of Guelph, and also a Design Arts Degree from Georgian College with 2 scholarships, I have also studied extensively at O.C.A. in Toronto and taken many professional seminars. I have painted full time for the 25 years since my graduation, exhibiting regularly and have received many awards."
