African Amaryllis - the perfect gift
by Gardenimport.com
November 1, 2009

Now that the days are growing shorter we're spending more time indoors. Being indoors can get a gardener down especially after a busy spring planting, summer enjoyment and autumn harvest. But before you look forward to our Spring 2010 catalogue and website, there is Amaryllis season!

It's hard to believe that such spectacular flowers are so spectacularly easy to grow. All you need is a pot, some potting soil and water! Put them together and, with our African Amaryllis, 3 to 4 weeks later you will start to see flower. Unlike most Amaryllis, our African ones bloom quickly and, better still, stay short so they don't fall over. They bloom for weeks; lasting longer if you keep them on the cool side.

Given their easy cultivation, they make a great gift for family or friends and will definitly cheer the heart of those who used to garden but no longer can. Amaryllis have been known to thaw the heart of the meanest plant hater or re-inspire a despondent "black thumb".

We offer 9 varieties in all.

AMALFI
This got rave reviews from all the staff when we grew this for trial. It's a unique colour of peachy rose with loads of medium size 5" blooms. AMALFI produces an average of 2 stems with up to 11 blooms.

COCKTAIL
Huge 18cm (7") scarlet flowers with striking white flashes in their throats. Each 32/34cm bulb averages 2 stems and up to 7 blooms.

CUPIDO
Last years most popular variety with 2 to 3 stems of cute and up to 10 white-centred, pink flowers.

GRAFFITI
Trumpet-shaped, cream-coloured flowers with fine scarlet lines and green throats. This is a Sonatini type Amaryllis. Sonatini make smaller bulbs (18/20cm), produce 2 to 3 flower stalks and up to 10 flowers. Plant 3 to a pot and you can have a bouquet of blooms.

JADE SERPENT
Elegant, light green flowers with deeper green throats. Each 18/20cm bulb produces an average of 2 stems and up to 8 flowers.

ROCK 'N ROLL
Fully double deep red blooms with contrasting while stripes. Each 32/34cm bulb averages 2 stems and up to 11 18cm (7") blooms.
