People’s Choice award brings new plants to public attention

Between July and September 2016 visitors to Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Wisley voted for their favourite summer bedding plants from a choice of 80 planted across the garden, with Solenostemon ‘Campfire’ earning the top spot.

Over the ten-week period more than 1600 visitors cast their votes in the annual RHS’ People’s Choice initiative, which was created to draw the public’s attention to the wide variety of new plants available for gardeners to enjoy. The RHS worked in partnership with world leading plant breeding companies in order to deliver one of the biggest RHS People’s Choice initiatives to date.

While Solenostemon ‘Campfire’ occupied the top position, two varieties of petunia occupied the second and third spots, with Petunia ‘Cascadias Rim Fantasy’ claiming the second place and Petunia ‘Amore’ Queen of Hearts’ named third in the poll.

Solenostemon ‘Campfire’ has a brilliant blood orange colour and excellent long-season performance under the most demanding garden conditions. For five weeks out of the ten week voting period it continuously held the top spot, emerging as the clear winner. Gardeners can purchase this plant from Ball Horticultural Company and its partner companies.

Petunia ‘Cascadias Rim Fantasy’ has beautiful bright violet flowers outlined with a clear white rim. Its slightly mounding shape make it particularly suitable for containers and hanging baskets. Bred by Danziger from Israel, the variety received 9.2% of the total votes and held the top spot for three weeks out of the ten week of the voting period. UK gardeners can purchase Petunia ‘Cascadia Rim Fantasy’ from Ball Colegrave, Delamore Young Plants and Arden Lea Nurseries.

Petunia ‘Amore’ Queen of Hearts’, bred by Danziger, was named in celebration of the heart shaped deep pink petals with a yellow stripe that make up this attractive flower. It is semi-trailing and excellent in baskets and containers. While it was voted in the top spot for just one week out of ten, it consistently secured a high number of votes. It is available from Ball Colegrave, Delamore YP and Arden Lea Nurseries.

Speaking about the People’s Choice competition, RHS Trials Development Manager, Mark Heath said: “It is exciting that plant breeders are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is available in the UK in terms of plant varieties. That the RHS is able to help introduce these new varieties to the gardening public underlines the vital role the charity plays in the life of UK gardening.

“We are delighted to be able to exhibit such a rich selection of garden plants that are still new to the UK market in order to inspire more people to try out cultivars they may not have been aware existed.”
